I just jumped outta my skin, left my body in some hospital, been dragged through a riff gate... And I'm in Oblivion. Vambrace? Not a problem.

Jennifer Tate, or Jen (ジェン Jen?), as she likes to be known, is the main protagonist featured in Primal. Unbeknownst to her, she is a human/demon hybrid, corrupted at an early age by Abaddon and in possession of powers that enable her to take on the demon aspects of each of the realms of Oblivion.

History[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Before Primal[]

When Jen was a baby, she was abducted from her home by Abaddon (or one of his minions, likely Belahzur) and lost both parents during the attack. After being altered through unknown means by the Lord of Chaos, Jen and another kidnapped baby, Lewis, were rescued by Abdizur, who then returned them to Mortalis. Abdizur was captured upon his return to the Nexus and tortured relentlessly, but never divulged the location of the infants.

Jen remained oblivious to what happened and grew up in a string of foster homes. It is suggested that her powers were locked away or at least laid dormant until Arella required Jen's aid.

At age nineteen, she met Lewis, who would become her soul mate, and has lived with him since.

Primal[]

Jen is currently twenty-one years old and works as a waitress, saving up enough money to put herself through college. One night, as Lewis is finishing a set with his up-and-coming rock band, he spots a strange figure in the crowd staring at him. After being consoled by a confused Jen, the couple leave the club, intending to pay their landlord. However, at that moment, the strange figure from before follows and, after decapitating the Nexus' bouncer, transforms into its true demonic form - Belahzur - and gives chase. Jen and Lewis are unable to run fast enough and she is knocked to the ground by the demon, before it swoops to capture the unconscious Lewis and flees.

Jen is taken to the hospital, where the doctors are uncertain that she will make it through. It is at this point that Scree appears and separates Jen's spirit from her body, enabling them to talk and travel to the Nexus. From that moment on, her life is forever changed and she discovers her true self.

Spoilers end here.

Personality[]

Jen has a "PerkyGoth" disposition, which involves enjoying the Goth style, but lacking the more maudlin or darker personality traits typically associated with those types of individuals. She has a short temper and a sharp tongue, but is compassionate as well. Although her short temper can get the best of her sometimes (e.g. she snaps during her second meeting with Arella after leaving Aquis, when Scree tells Jen that there's more still to do in Oblivion), her heart is in the right place (such as when, in Aquis, she refuses to let a trapped Undine engineer get killed).

Jen's Alignment is Chaotic Good[]

  • Primal features a balance between Order and Chaos, in which Order mostly functions as Good and Chaos functions as Evil; the game's plot involves the balance being tipped towards Chaos, requiring the protagonist to even things back out.
    • Order Versus Chaos is different from Good vs Evil.
    • Jen is Chaotic Good. Laws matter less to her than doing the right thing. As can be said for down below.
      • Scree: "You were brought into Oblivion as a baby. Your soul tainted by the touch of Chaos."
      • "She is a wild creature, but I believe her heart is good."
    • Scree is Lawful Neutral. If the rules say so, he's for it. This is demonstrated in their almost violent disagreement over Spoiler: [sacrificing the Undine Engineer, Aturo]. For Scree the sacrifice is on the side of Order, he's neutral about about it being good or evil. For Jen, the decision is equally clear the other way. She regards it as Evil.

Appearance[]

Jen is a tall, pale-skinned woman with shoulder-length, straight dark hair tied in low pigtails. She also has a messy fringe/bangs that hangs over her eyes and reaches halfway down her nose. Her outfit consists of a halter-neck, dark red top fixed with a pair of belts across the stomach that reach around the back. Her trousers are bootcut, with a belt around the right leg that functions as a makeshift sheath for the dagger she later obtains. On her feet are black work boots.

Jen's tattoo, situated on the middle of her upper back, is elaborate and consists of a circle intersected by several curved spikes that overlap one another. According to Jen, it was designed by Lewis after they met; he told her it was an ancient rune of protection. The same pattern can be seen on several doors within the Nexus, but its exact origin and symbolism are mysterious. At one point, Jen asks Scree about it, but he responds, "I simply can't tell you.". It is unknown if he was genuinely unsure or being evasive. He does, however, mention that it is very important to know where Lewis saw the symbol, but Jen replies that Lewis wouldn't tell her.

Abilities[]

Jen obtains four demon forms on the course of her adventure and gain many spiritual gifts representing the four elements of earth, water, air and fire. She also obtains several distinct weapons for each aspect.

Ferai - Terrathermal Emission[]

She can emit earth energized claws and use them as powerful hand-to-hand weapons. She can also run much more quickly than in other forms, and jump to higher, previously out of reach areas.

This form is obtained in Solum from Herne. Its color is green and represents the element of earth.

Undine - Electrical Emission[]

This form allows her to swim and breathe underwater. However, being in this form out of water causes her to suffocate, forcing her either back into water or to switch into another form. She can emit and project electric arcs from her hands, which can be used as a shield or as long electric strands to stab and whip opponents.

This form is obtained in Aquis from Aino. Its color is blue and represents the element of water.

Wraith - Temporal Delay[]

In this form, she can dilate time, causing Jen to speed up, and time to delay and slow down. She can also form an electric-based whip and short sword as weapons.

This form is obtained in Aetha from the Duke after laying his bones to rest and defeating Valeera's to get her sword. Its color is purple and represents the element of wind.

Djinn - Igneous Weaponry[]

As a Djinn, she can create blades of fire to use against the rock creatures of Volca. She can create two smaller dual-wielded swords or one massive two-handed sword, easily switching between the two.

This form is initially obtained In Volca by Iblis, although turns out to control Jen's mind. She later receives an untainted version from Malikel. Its color is red and represents the element of fire.

Other Abilities[]

In normal form, Jen is capable of regenerating health when not involved in combat. If her human energy is reduced to zero, Scree must travel to the nearest Rift Gate and pull her spirit back through into Oblivion.

Energy Absorption[]

In all forms (except human), she can absorb energies transmuted from Scree's astral energy source which refills her health bar.

Meaning of Name[]

"Jennifer" is a modern derivative of "Guinevere", wife of King Arthur. The name itself is Welsh and means "Fair One."

"Tate", of Middle English origin, means "cheerful."

Quotes[]

  • "I'm 21 now, Lewis, too old to be living like a bum. Plus, I'm gonna need study space once I start college." - Jen to Lewis in the opening scene.
  • "No autographs, creep" - Jen to a disguised Belazhur after grabbing the arm of Lewis following the quote above
  • "Just one thing, though. No matter where we are, you gotta stop calling me 'Jennifer.' You sound like my step dad. It's 'Jen'." - Jen to Scree when first entering the Nexus.
  • "Most parents took the trouble to take their kids swimming. Some even went horse-riding, too! Girl scouts... tap classes... with me you get none of that extra-curricular crap, okay?" - Jen when Scree asks about swimming in Aquis.
  • "I'm just a coffee shop waitress!" - Jen to Arella during their first meeting.
  • "She is a wild creature, but I believe her heart is good." - Scree, speaking of Jen.
